Mononion was conceived as a Ghul Lord, a mage delving into the dark arts of necromancy. The allure of commanding negative energy and the macabre aesthetic of the class drew me in. I envisioned him as a brooding figure, shrouded in mystery, with a presence that unsettled both allies and enemies.
Memorable Moments
One of Mononion’s most significant accomplishments was the creation of his keep, Stygian Set, located in the world of Greyhawk. I spent a great deal of time developing its details, making it a true extension of Mononion’s personality and power. The keep was enhanced through several wishes, one of which granted it an intelligence of its own. This made Stygian Set more than just a stronghold—it became an active entity in Mononion’s story, shaping interactions, defenses, and the overall atmosphere of his domain. Future posts will detail the intricacies of the keep, but its existence alone was one of Mononion’s greatest legacies.
Character Growth
Initially, Mononion was driven by a thirst for power and a desire to master the forbidden aspects of magic. As his power grew, he became obsessed with the creation of new undead creatures—beings that would surpass the traditional horrors of necromancy. This drive led to the birth of the cenobites, unique undead creatures that were part undead humanoid and part undead spider. These abominations possessed powerful abilities, combining necrotic magic with arachnid agility and resilience. Their presence not only cemented Mononion’s reputation as a formidable necromancer but also challenged him to push the boundaries of his dark craft.
Playstyle & Role
At first, Mononion was the awkward mage fascinated by necromancy but still cooperative in adventuring parties. His skills proved valuable, as his presence meant the group never had to worry about undead attacks. However, as he grew in power, he became increasingly solitary. His obsession with necromantic creations and the pursuit of greater magic made him less reliant on companions. By the later levels, Mononion only participated in epic battles, no longer engaging in standard adventuring life. His focus had shifted from mere survival and treasure-seeking to leaving a lasting mark on the world through his undead legions.
Final Thoughts
Mononion was one of my most detailed characters. Every aspect of him was meticulously planned, from his clothing and armor to his keep and minions. I appreciated the depth and moral ambiguity that came with the Ghul Lord class, which made playing him a captivating experience. I even created custom artwork for him and his minions, though I have yet to locate those drawings. If and when I find them, I will include them. Overall, Mononion remains one of my most memorable characters, embodying the delicate dance between power and its consequences.
